Thursday Night Walt Disney Company Sketches

• This is from last nights Thursday night drawing class I instruct @ The Walt Disney Company. •
The 5-minute sketch above was done Pastel while talking about how to capture a more "Classical," Disneyesque story-sketch feeling to Costumed Gesture Drawing (with my typical personal extra push to focus on added Character and Personality to ones sketches).
(This sketch was actually done from a previous pose that I had the model take the pose again, so please excuse the minor changes in the posing - which I pushed farther to make it stronger!)

•  Pushing and "Plus-ing" is a must when doing Costumed Gesture Drawing with an emphasis on Character and Personality!) •
Here I was talking about using a more aggressive/story-driven sketch which focused on including the essential elements of the personality of the background and the world the character is acting in and "staging" it in a way that adds to the story of the pose and that beat!

Best,

MAC

During this drawing session while I was working on the pastel sketch, - I was also asked by a very prominent story artist at the studio, "Why does my work sets itself apart from the "typical/generic" gesture drawing sketches that are so prevalent now-a-days?"

My answer is of course, there is room for all types of designs and sketches in the work force. Usually a focus on their job (on a day-to-day basis) dictates what they are focusing on during a gesture drawing session, knowingly... or not. BUT, I really do try to reach a very high level of weight and counter balance within the form AND I am VERY VERY VERY conscious of adding my own typical personal extra push, focusing on added Character and Personality to my sketches.
Not in just in the designs.....I try to really add a SOUL and a Personality within the overall design. A shiny shell that's empty, is.....soulless and empty.

And that's the difference for me...at least for now.
